DMS With Your Own Database

Last updated 6 November 2026 · By Manish Purohit, Founder

A distributor management system (DMS) with your own database means the application reads and writes directly to a PostgreSQL database and file storage bucket you provision and control, rather than copying your data into the vendor's own systems. It's for IT and security teams who want channel billing software without handing over a second copy of the company's data.

The problem

Most SaaS billing or channel software asks you to trust it with a full copy of your data, stored on infrastructure you never see. That copy becomes its own liability -- another place the data can be breached, leaked, or simply mishandled, and another thing to migrate out if you ever switch providers.

How WorklikeGenie does it, step by step

  1. You provision the infrastructure. Your own PostgreSQL database and a file storage bucket.
  2. You give WorklikeGenie the connection details once, during setup.
  3. Connection credentials are encrypted and stored centrally -- never in plain text.
  4. Decrypted only per request, in memory, for the length of that one request, never cached beyond it.
  5. Every dashboard reads your data live -- there is no second, WorklikeGenie-controlled copy to lose control of.
  6. Per-company separation is enforced structurally -- one company's data can never appear in another's.

What you see in the portal

Example
During setup, you enter your database connection string and storage bucket credentials once. From then on, every dashboard -- billing, orders, beat plan -- reads from that database in real time; nothing about day-to-day use reveals or requires re-entering those credentials.

Who it suits

Companies whose IT or security policy requires keeping business data on infrastructure they control, or who simply don't want a second copy of billing and partner data sitting with a vendor.

How this compares with a conventional SaaS

A conventional SaaS stores your data on its own servers -- convenient, but it means trusting the vendor's own security practices with a full copy of your business data, and a migration project if you ever leave. With WorklikeGenie, the data was never anywhere but your own infrastructure to begin with, so there's no copy to migrate out.

Frequently asked questions

Where does our data actually live?
In a PostgreSQL database and a file storage bucket you provision and own, not infrastructure WorklikeGenie controls.
What does WorklikeGenie store centrally, then?
An encrypted connection pointer -- the credentials needed to reach your database and storage -- plus account-level records (who's a user, which company they belong to, login history). Decrypted only in memory, for the length of a single request.
What does this mean for our IT and security team?
Your database stays under your own backup, access-control and monitoring policies -- WorklikeGenie doesn't bypass them, it reads through whatever access you grant. Worth reviewing with your own team before committing, same as any vendor with database-level access.
Does WorklikeGenie hold any security certifications?
Not currently. WorklikeGenie does not hold third-party certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. If that's a requirement for your organisation, raise it directly before committing.
What are the limits of this model?
You're responsible for your own database and storage uptime, backups and access control -- WorklikeGenie reads live, so if your database is unreachable, the application can't show your data either.
